Travel Purse

10" x 10" x 2", plus strap

2004

When I was 22 I spent the summer in Europe. I made a purse for the trip out of tapestry cloth; it had a complex lining with many pockets and zippers.

I still like this purse best for traveling, because it is light and just the right size. The tapestry cloth was worn to shreds, but the lining was fine. So I replaced the tapestry-cloth shell by a quilt. The resurrected purse was immediately field-tested in Italy, with great success.

The fabrics are almost all black, grey, dark blue, and dull brown, yet contrast gives them life. The design is a random arrangement of half-inch squares, formally known as a Postage Stamp pattern.
